Accountability of NGOs

Letter April 05, 2018
Many listed with the government have either outsourced their operations or have done nothing for years

KARACHI: With around 4,500 non-governmental organisations not engaged in any sort of welfare work or social sector activities they were formed to perform, it is not just the social welfare department of the Sindh government that lags behind. Possibly due to the absence of timely checks over the activities of social welfare organisations, many listed with the government have either outsourced their operations or have done nothing for years.

In fact, many political parties in the province have social welfare wings that collect funds to finance the political activities of their parties in the name of charity and welfare. There has to be a strong system of scrutiny and checks and balances for the NGOs working in the province, and those who fail to meet a certain criteria of carrying out a set number of initiatives in their respective work fields must have their licences or work permits revoked.
