Protection of minorities

It is important to decide upon the status of National Commission for Minorities on a priority basis

ISLAMABAD: The killing spell in Balochistan has been continuing. In Quetta, four members of a Christian family were shot dead on Monday, April 2. Besides, three others from another community were shot dead on the same day. Violence against minority groups remains deeply entrenched in the less tolerant and extremist, fundamentalist structure of society.

Moreover, another newspaper report on the same day informs that the status of the National Commission for Minorities remains undecided, despite the fact that numerous bills have been put forward in legislature. Commissions as statutory bodies play an active role in assisting the relevant ministries with their work, as previously, provincial commissions formed for human rights have led to an improvement in the follow-up and perusal of human rights’ violation cases in their respective provinces. So it is important to decide upon the status of National Commission for Minorities on a priority basis.
