Ilmesters Academy is the first school in Pakistan to get authorised for International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP). The final year students of the PYP carry out an extended, in-depth collaborative project that ends with a PYP exhibition at Ocean Mall.
They work collaboratively to conduct an exhaustive inquiry into real life issues. Then, they synthesise all of the essential elements of the PYP in ways that can be shared with the wider school community.
At Ilmesters Academy, PYP 5 students chose ‘climate change’ for their exhibition. They chose this topic due to recent natural disasters like floods that have had disastrous effects. During the research phase, the individuals identified human activities that are amplifying climate change. They in turn linked this information to the repercussions of climate change for humans.
It is not surprising that they concluded that although climate change does have some positive consequence, they are trivial. These enthusiastic youngsters had set out to eliminate climate change, but they had to admit that it can only be mitigated, not effaced. Towards the end of the project, they were tasked with finding feasible solutions for this phenomenon.
They visited the Karachi American School to raise awareness, participated in Clean Karachi Walk, wrote articles, made videos, planted trees, proposed use of renewable energy like utilising human energy and windmills), suggested tax impositions on carbon emissions from factories, the use of artificial trees to increase air quality and the application of three R's (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle). The research culminated in the exhibition at Ocean Mall in which students showcased their findings.

Ilmesters Academy is working as an IB World School and pursuing a programme offered by IB. The Academy, strives to produce inquisitive learners who not only build on their previous knowledge but also verify it. All learning that takes place is conceptual. The concepts are introduced through hands-on activities.
Students are given the opportunity to decide the way they want to learn and their questions are used as the basis of teaching. Children choose tasks at times that are designed to help society and create awareness in the people around them. Exhibition and personal project are a part of assessments in which students are required to devise an action plan that tackles world issues.
What is IB?
The IB offers an education for students from age 3 to 19, comprising of four programmes that teach students the art of thinking critically and independently and employing logic. It prepares students to succeed in a world where facts and fiction merge in the news, and where asking the right questions is a crucial skill.

IB Programmes furnish learning skills IB learner profile attributes. Our unique theory of knowledge (TOK) course empowers them to grasp how knowledge itself is created. They are encouraged to try different approaches to learning, take responsibility for their educational progress, ask tough questions, think out of the box and develop research skills. Most importantly, IB programmes compel students to be active members of their community and to think of learning from a broader perspective.
