Convicting the powerful

Letter April 03, 2018
Laws should be applied equally to the common people and the influential who misuse their authority

HYDERABAD: According to a recent news report, low rate of convictions in corruption or money-related cases has led legal experts in the country to demand of the government to ensure that those found guilty are convicted and are not able to take advantage of the loopholes in the related laws. It is commendable that laws are being made stricter, yet the attempts to bring change in the system through laws will remain unfruitful if they are not equally applied to all — that is, laws should be applied equally to the common people and the influential who misuse their authority and power.

As politics and corruption go hand in hand in Pakistan, it is usually politically influential people who indulge in corruption and get away with it.
