Communal riots in India

Letter March 29, 2018
It’s time that the people of India came together to protest against such brutal killings and violations

LAHORE: Communal clashes in India have been a frequent occurrence since the Modi government came into power. His Hindutva narrative, in particular, has greatly disrupted the harmony the Indian people were enjoying before he took office. The latest Hindu-Muslim riots took the lives of three people in West Bengal state, where a clash took place between supporters of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party and those of an opposition party. The Muslim minority in the country is living under fear.

What is worse is that the frequent clashes or mob lynching of Muslims have not moved the government enough to act against such atrocities. Instead PM Modi is all set to change the history of the country by trying to assert that the ‘true ancestors’ of India were Hindus rather than the Muslims of the Mughal empire.

In the wake of these developments, India, a country that boasts of its diversity, is truly digressing from its secular image that is enshrined in its Constitution. It’s time that the people of India came together to protest against such brutal killings and violations of its constitution.
