PML-N submits resolution to condemn revenge rape in Toba Tek Singh

Resolution demands a law to take action against panchayats and jirgas

LAHORE: A resolution has been submitted in the Punjab Assembly condemning the revenge rape of two girls on the order of the area's panchayat in Pir Mahal area of Toba Tek Singh.

The resolution was submitted by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Hina Pervez Butt. The resolution starts by condemning the revenge rape and states that the panchayat gave the punishment of rape to the perpetrator’s sister.

An agreement was also signed to not take any legal action over the order of panchayat on a stamp paper. On March 21, resident Waseem of Pir Mahal raped a girl. The family of the victim put forward a shameless condition to compensate for the crime.

Panchayat orders ‘revenge rape’ of teen girl

The panchayat ordered that the victim’s brother will rape Waseem’s sister, and on their orders, the victim's brother raped the innocent girl. The resolution demanded that a law be constituted to take action against such informal institutions of law like panchayats and jirgas in rural areas. Due to these panchayats, thousands of girls have become victims of such tyranny.

The incident had taken place recently and caught the attention of the media and the police, 12 people have been arrested in relation to the case, and the incident is drawing attention from media outlets.
