Precautions for the heat

Letter March 27, 2018
Mobile first-aid ambulances should also be made available in case of any emergencies

KARACHI: Scorching heat has already hit Karachi as the temperatures have risen up to 39oC, making it nearly-impossible for people to walk the streets. And while some have the opportunity and choice to avoid walking along the streets and take public transport or their own cars instead, others lack that choice and have to walk long under the heat to make it to their respective destinations.

To avoid fatalities similar to those that were experienced in 2015, the city administration and other authorities concerned should put out water coolers on streets for the poor to get some relief under the soaring temperatures. Once installed, the authorities should ensure that the coolers are filled as soon as they run out of water. Moreover, mobile first-aid ambulances should also be made available in case of any emergencies. And shopkeepers should also be taught how to give first aid to someone hit by a heat stroke, so that no life is lost during the time one waits for an ambulance to arrive.
