The project would be completed at a cost of Rs5 million, said Rawalpindi Divisional Commercial Officer (DCO) Raza Habib.
Speaking to the media, he explained that the roof, flooring, beautification of the platforms, repair work of the walls and modern lighting system would be included in the project which was expected to be completed by within three months.
Under the project, all the main railway stations of the country are being renovated while this will be the first in Rawalpindi Division. Other stations of the division will also be renovated, he added.
To a question, he said, Pakistan Railways, Rawalpindi Division had earned Rs1.497 billion against the set target of Rs1479 billion over the past eight months. Habib added that the Rawalpindi division had generated additional revenue of Rs17.964 million during this period, particularly from the passenger service.
He said that total earnings of Pakistan Railways including passengers, freight and other services were Rs18 billion in 2013. But in just the first eight months of the financial year 2017-18, they had earned approximately Rs31 billion.
The DCO said that they had taken a number of initiatives to facilitate passengers including the introduction of the e-ticketing and duplicate ticket facility.
The DCO further said the security at the railway station had been beefed up to ensure the safety of passengers and for their goods.
He said that 16 closed-circuit television cameras (CCTV) had been installed to ensure foolproof security of passengers at platforms, while metal walk-through gates, had also been installed at the entrance.
To another question, he said that scanners were installed at the station to check luggage, parcels and other items booked for transportation to other cities of the country.
