Prisons Inspector-General (IG) Nusrat Mangan, while exercising the power conferred upon him under Rule 214 of the Pakistan Prison Rules, awarded special remission of two months to all the prisoners except those convicted for espionage, anti-state activities, subversion, terrorism, karo kari and under the Foreigners Act, 1946.
The letter from the IG's office was sent to all the prisons in the province on Friday and the total number of prisoners benefitting from the grant remission will be finalised today (Saturday).

Talking to The Express Tribune, a staff officer of the prisons IG, Shunail Shah, said that the chief of the prisons has given 60 days, while the chief minister has given an additional remission of 30 days to the prisoners.
He said that due to the remission some of the prisoners who have less than 90 days of penalty left will be released immediately. "The prisons IG is authorised to grant remission of 60 days in a year, according to Pakistan's prison rules," he explained.
