Shehzad Roy’s activism

Letter March 24, 2018
The singer has rightly used his star power to convince people about the importance of educating children

ISLAMABAD: Not many celebrities in the country chose to be activists, especially because the culture of activism is still relatively in its infancy in Pakistan, where many people believe it to be unfruitful. However, when one thinks of a celebrity doing activism right in the country, Shehzad Roy is the name that immediately comes to mind.

The singer has rightly used his star power to convince people about the importance of educating children in the country, especially those hailing from rural areas. His activism also led him to be appointed as the National Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime last year. And this year his efforts were recognised by his own country as he was given the prestigious Sitara-e-Imtiaz on March 23rd in Islamabad. The singer tweeted that he will be dedicating his award to the unsung heroes who never get recognised for the contribution they make to society.

Perhaps, it is time that more celebrities followed in Roy’s footsteps and actively worked for the betterment of society. Only a united Pakistan can truly progress.
