Pakistan’s water crisis

Pakistan’s policymakers and leadership remain unmoved as to the dangers of increasing water shortage

KARACHI: Water crisis in Pakistan is deepening by each passing day and the increasing population growth in the country has only added to the deteriorating situation. According to a recently released International Monetary Fund report, Pakistan ranks third among the countries facing water shortage. But despite such frequent reports and studies that should be sending alarm bells ringing in the power corridors of the country, Pakistan’s policymakers and leadership remain unmoved as to the dangers of increasing water shortage.

Neither the federal government nor the provincial governments are interested in countering the rising water shortage through pragmatic policies. While the political leadership is busy in playing political games and not realising that the looming dangers of the water crisis is the biggest threat to Pakistan than anything else.

If steps are not taken right away, it wouldn’t be long before the entire country experiences a drought-like situation like the one that was experienced in Thar district of Sindh province that killed around 828 children in a span of three years. Actions need to be taken today to save our tomorrow.
