Corrupt police force

Letter March 23, 2018
Blatant misuse of authority makes people lose hope in the country’s justice system

LAHORE: There is little doubt that the country’s police is corrupt just like several government institutions. But what is even worse is the institution’s inclination towards furthering the interests of influential people, even if they are the ones who need to be scrutinised. One such recent case came in the forefront from the city of Multan, where the police appear to be favouring a rape suspect because he is an influential landlord.

The survivor’s family took to the streets to protest against the police, who had not only allegedly avoided arrest of the suspect but had also avoided mentioning some facts in the FIR lodged by the family. This includes the fact that the minor girl was abducted at gunpoint by the landlord and his employee. Moreover, the case was only registered against the employee sparing the landlord altogether.

Such blatant misuse of authority makes people lose hope in the country’s justice system, which could otherwise be strengthened with the support of the people. Not only should the suspect be arrested but the police officials who had chosen to side with the culprit should also be suspended. The police force doesn’t need employees who don’t want to serve the civilians and don’t do the very job they have been assigned.
