DRS recommended for all internationals

ICC wants qualifiers for associate nations before World Cup.

LONDON:

The cricket committee of the International Cricket Council (ICC) has recommended that the controversial Decision Review System (DRS) should be used in all international matches.

Committee chairman Clive Lloyd made the announcement at Lord’s after the conclusion of a two-day meeting.

“The committee, while recognising the need to take acccount of existing (television) contracts, unanimously recommended the system be used in all Test matches, One-Day Internationals (ODI) and Twenty20s,” said Lloyd.

The committee further recommended that teams should be restricted to one unsuccessful challenge per innings in ODIs and Twenty20 games, rather than the current two to stop what Dave Richardson, the ICC’s General Manager, called the ‘tactical’ use of reviews.

World Cup qualifiers  recommended

The committee also felt that non-Test playing nations should be given the chance to qualify for the World Cup.

Under plans announced during an ICC summit last month, participation at the next two World Cups is set to be restricted to the 10 full-member nations, which caused uproar in associate countries.

However, Richardson told reporters that the committee would be recommending a qualification series.

“The committee favours a system of qualification for the World Cup,” he said.
