Perveen Rahman and the land mafia

The land mafia in the metropolis is an open secret and has been encroaching upon lands

KARACHI: The death of social activist Perveen Rahman had left many in the country shocked and scared as her efforts to bring justice to the poor and needy in Karachi had led to her murder. And almost six years after her murder, the interim Joint Investigation Team report has revealed the involvement of Karachi’s land mafia in the murder.

The land mafia in the metropolis is an open secret and has been encroaching upon lands, especially those of the poor to reap benefits off them. And this is exactly what Perveen was set to expose, highlight the issue of land grabbing. While the JIT’s efforts should be lauded as this information may lead to finding the culprits behind her murder, it is also pertinent to note that it is highly unlikely that the mafia is working without the support or backing by a political party; because for a mafia to truly be able to function in a city without showing any remorse, it ought to have support of the elite.

Thus, it becomes important for the JIT to also keep that under consideration and conduct a thorough investigation to finally put an end to the notorious land mafia in the city.
