Old friends, new foes

A key faction of the PPP’s previous political ally, has cited the PPP’s poor performance in the province

KARACHI: Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) nominee Sherry Rehman will contest for the position of the leader of the opposition in the Senate against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) nominee Azam Swati. Whereas the PPP has garnered support from members of the Federally Administrated Tribal Areas and Balochistan, the PPP’s old ally Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), during its time in the federal government, has announced its support for the PTI’s candidate.

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), a key faction of the PPP’s previous political ally, has cited the PPP’s poor performance in the province and massive corruption for snubbing the request to back Sherry Rehman. However, the stated reason might only be the half-truth that reflects the change in the equation between the PPP and MQM over the past few years, particularly after the 2013 elections and during the PPP’s government in the province of Sindh.

Once the federal government elected in 2013 decided to conduct an operation in Karachi, the PPP decided to part ways with the MQM to avoid getting dragged into turmoil the MQM had created in Karachi during 2008-2013.
