Privatisation to the rescue

The case of Pakistan Post is still fixable without the need for pouring in billions as bailout packages

LAHORE: Keeping up with its precedent of privatising loss-making public enterprises, the government is now planning to privatise Pakistan Post. Some months ago, the National Assembly during one of its sessions was informed of the monetary loss worth billions of rupees that the national postal service was generating on an annual basis. Despite the recommendations given to upgrade and remove the outdated operational and management system of the service, the government has come up with the only solution it has to deal with loss-making departments, that is, to privatise them.

As the opposition too has opposed privatising Pakistan Post, the government should certainly think twice before putting the entity up for bidding as unlike the Pakistan International Airlines and the Pakistan Steel Mills, the case of Pakistan Post is still fixable without the need for pouring in billions as bailout packages.
