NAB action: Man arrested for Rs9b vehicle import scam

Import of vehicles which are more than five-years-old is banned under the Import Policy 2016

PESHAWAR: The apex anti-corruption watchdog on Thursday arrested a man who was allegedly involved in a scam to illegally import construction vehicles. The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Region arrested Jameel Ahmad Jan, the chief executive officer of Jan Builders Peshawar for his alleged involvement in corrupt practices which caused a loss of approximately Rs9 billion to the national exchequer.  During the course of the investigation, it was revealed that the import of vehicles which are more than five-years-old is banned under the Import Policy 2016.

However,  Jan, in connivance with officials of the Customs Dry Port in Peshawar and a Karachi based bank, had imported 1,450 construction machinery and was trying to get it cleared illegally.
