KARACHI: National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) chief Usman Mobin has sacked two directors and transferred posting of authority’s Sindh director general over incompetence when he paid ‘surprise visits’ of Nadra centres across Karachi on Wednesday.

The snap visits were paid in a bid to check whether Nadra officials were performing their duties and if the general public had any complaints.

According to his spokesperson, Usman Mobin visited the offices across Karachi, inquiring customers awaiting their turns in long queues about issues they were facing.

Expressing dissatisfaction at the standards of services being offered to the customers, the Nadra chief changed the entire staff deployed at the mega centre in Defence. He also suspended four top officials, including two directors, in-charge of Nadra centres after receiving complaints against them from the public.

The spokesperson further said the Nadra chief has directed to keep the mega centres open for 24 hours, all week long.

Mobin said all Nadra centres would also remain open on Saturdays and Sundays. The new working hours at these centres are from 9 am to 9 pm, throughout the week.

"Customers are guests of God," the Nadra chief said, adding they should be treated with utmost respect.

"Such an attitude towards the masses cannot be tolerated under any circumstances," he said.

As per the spokesperson, senior officials of the authority have been summoned by the chief for a meeting to go over the public complaints.

Mobin was reappointed as the Nadra chairman by the federal government for another three years on February 8 after his first term expired on February 5.

After the end of his first term, the public faced immense difficulties due to the delay in procurement of documents including the computerised national identity cards (CNIC), child registration certificate (CRC), family registration certificate (FRC) and death certificate.

The printing process was halted because all these documents needed signature of the Nadra chief. However, the process was resumed following Mobin's reappointment.
