UN watchdog: IAEA chief to call on PM during three-day visit

The agency is known as centre of cooperation in nuclear field

ISLAMABAD: Director General (DG) of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Yukiya Amano, will arrive Monday on a three-day official visit to Pakistan.

During his stay, Amano will visit various centres of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) in Islamabad, Faisalabad, and Karachi, besides calling on Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.

As a founding member of IAEA, Pakistan has a history of deep cooperation with IAEA in areas of nuclear power, industrial application of nuclear techniques, non-destructive testing, food and agriculture, soil improvement, radiation induced mutation, radiation oncology and nuclear medicines, and environmental protection.

Widely known as the world’s “Nuclear watchdog” organization within the United Nations hierarchy, IAEA is the centre for cooperation in the nuclear field.

Amano, hailing from Japan has held the post of DG IAEA since December 2009 after serving in various other positions within the organization such as Chairman of the IAEA Board of Governors from 2005 to 2006.  Moreover, the IAEA chief’s arrival in Pakistan is of key national interest as many new vistas of cooperation would be explored.
