Moroccan PhD student wins Miss Arab Veil award

A Moroccan woman has won Miss Arab Veil 2018 – an annual beauty contest held in Cairo, Egypt exclusively for Hijabis this week.

Nisrine El Kettani, the newly-crowned veil award, shared her happiness on social media accounts, Facebook and Instagram.

She shared a video on Instagram after victory saying, “I’m so proud that I represented the Arab woman and raised the Moroccan flag,”

The winner,  a PhD student in Civil Engineering, while giving interview to Akhbar Al Yaoum said that she would try to balance her studies, career and what would follow her success in the contest.

El Kettani’s purpose for participating in the Miss Arab Veil competition was to start an organisation that defends women’s rights and fights sexual harassment against women in the Arab world.


She added that her aim was to break the stereotypical image of hijab wearing women by participating in the beauty contest.

“I want to break the stereotype about the Hijabi woman and prove that she can also participate in contests as such and that she can prove herself in the Arab society,” she said.

She took participation in consideration after receiving messages on her Instagram account that encouraged her to participate in the beauty contest.

The selection was made on criteria such as etiquette, poise, modesty, and educational level, she was selected to participate based on these criteria.

“It is a dream come true,” El Kettani expressed her joyful sentiments on Instagram.
