Unhealthy food: SC imposes ban on Ajinomoto

LAHORE: The Supreme Court imposed a ban on the sale and purchase of Ajinomoto (Chinese salt) on Saturday. The three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar passed the orders while hearing a suo motu over the sale of Ajinomoto and used cooking oil. As the proceedings began, the chief justice inquired about the Amicus Curiae Mustafa Ramday as he was tasked to probe the issue. To which, Advocate General Punjab Shakeelur Rehman Khan submitted that he went abroad due to his personal engagements. Chief Secretary Punjab Zahid Saeed submitted that he contacted the officials concerned in Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the federal government in compliance with bench directions. He submitted that the Sindh government had imposed a ban on Ajinomoto and a summary had also been moved to the prime minister with a request to impose a ban on Ajinomoto salt. At this, the bench imposed a ban on the sale and purchase of the salt observing that it was harmful for human consumption. The bench also observed that the prime minister could act independently in the matter.

Anees | 6 years ago | Reply Regretfully SC is taking decisions of highly technical kinds must be screened by the scientific panel instead of non technical individuals debate and make harsh / unfair decisions. No doubt Oxytocin injection ban decision was absolutely correct in the interest of community but MSG banning is a little bit harsh one. Many issues in SC rooms come under discussions of sensitive nature and after hearing debate from our respectable judges with no sense of technical awareness boldly & openly talk reflect non seriousness.
