KARACHI: Hamza Qaimkhani, the lone son of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) MPA Rubina Qaimkhani, lost his life in a road accident on Friday in Karachi. Initial investigations suggest that the accident occurred due to speeding.

The accident took place when the teenager, who was 16 years old, was travelling in an SUV with his friend Afsaryab Khan.

The vehicle overturned near the Village Restaurant on Sea View Road within the limits of the Sahil police station. As a result, both Hamza and his friend were critically injured.

Following the accident, rescue workers from different welfare associations immediately reached the site and shifted the victims to South City Hospital in Clifton.

Hamza’s injuries were very severe and he passed away. His friend is still admitted at the hospital and is in critical condition.

An extra contingent of law enforcers reached the site to inquire about the incident. Police officials, while quoting the initial investigations, said that the accident occurred due to speeding.

Sahil police station SHO Shoaibur Rehman said that deceased and injured both lived on Khayaban-e-Seher in Defence Housing Authority.

“The boys were in the speeding vehicle when the driver lost control and the vehicle overturned,” said SHO Rehman. However, he said the case is still being investigated from different angles.

Former provincial minister Rubina has been a member of the Sindh Assembly since June, 2013. Previously, she has served as a member of the National Assembly from 2002 to 2013.

She was elected to the National Assembly as a PPP candidate on a seat reserved for women from Sindh in 2002. She was re-elected in 2008. She served as federal parliamentary secretary for human rights during her second tenure as an MNA.

In a statement, PPP Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Co-chairperson Asif Ali Zardari expressed their grief and sorrow over Hamza’s death. In a condolence message, they sympathised with Rubina and offered condolences to her and other members of the family.

Home Minister Sohail Anwar Siyal and Inspector-General of Police Allah Dino Khowaja also took notice of the accident and sought separate reports from the traffic DIG and South DIG over the accident.

But whether he was driving or not it appears the vast majority of people disregard to use seatbelts either out of ignorance or from some misguided sense of being 'macho'.

Khurram | 6 years ago | Reply It is SAD to hear that people, rather than being sorrowful and showering dua's on the lost soul are calling him a son of rich who might have killed other citizens and are bold enough to even anticipate the future, had he lived. The self-righteousness sense is toxic indeed. Well, true that he was wrong but, so are the bikers who neither have license and are very often involved in over-speeding and damaging other people's property and in some cases even causing death of other people. THIS DIVIDE IN OUR SOCIETY IS SHAMEFUL, ALLAH SWT HAS MADE THEM RICH AND THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE AND ANSWERABLE TO THE CREATOR ALONE AND REMEMBER POOR OR RICH ALL ARE HONOR BOUND BY HUQQO-UL-IBAD EQUALLY. Finally, SUVs' have high ground clearance and so can rollover if turned sharply.

Adil | 6 years ago | Reply Spoiled kids of powerful people. They risk lives of others as well. Those mourning parents are in reality the ones responsible. Their kids not only risk their own lives but the lives of ordinary citizens as well. Had this boy killed someone else due to his speeding, he would be having pizza while watching movie under protection of the "law enforcers". Pathetic system, to say the least.

Road stretch east of Village Restaurant is almost deserted and inviting for young bike riders and sons of rich and powerful to use it as a speed track. SUVs are generally well designed and stable vehicles. These animals do not swever even on snow covered roads. Unless the driver is unexperienced or drunk. An Autopsy of the deceased is in order if Police desires to follow proper procedure to determine the cause of rolling over of 4 ton monster hitting a curb and snuffing off a young life with it.

JJ | 6 years ago | Reply I never risked my life, after realizing the suffering of my mother in bringing me to this world and her consistent sacrifices every single day since I was born and then I became a handsome young man. The fruit of the endless devotion of my mother, wasted in a craze of speeding is not worth, not even thinking about it.
