Irresponsible reporting

KARACHI: Superstar Sridevi’s sudden demise at the age of 55 has shocked many not only in India but also her fans across the globe. While fans and family mourn the loss, the Indian media has gone into a frenzy with their insensitive reporting. Not only have they made the first female superstar’s demise a prime time topic discussed in panel discussions but they have also sensitised it to a point where they have speculated controversies around it.

Some channels have gone as far as indirectly claiming that Boney Kapoor might have murdered her or that Sridevi’s obsession with ‘looking good’ led her to take a number of drugs that may have led to her early demise. This crass form of reporting done after a legend’s demise has only gone on to show that the media has no ethics or morals and has failed their so-called loved superstar.

So, it is important for the Indian government to devise a policy for its media that sets guidelines on how to report on such sensitive topics because not only is such reporting disrespectful to a dead person but also towards their family.
