Ban on garbage dumping

Letter February 28, 2018
The department should form a committee that overlooks the implementation of the ban on dumping

KARACHI: The Home Department of Sindh has imposed a ban on garbage dumping in the open in residential and commercial areas. On orders of the Supreme Court-appointed judicial commission on water and sanitation, the department has finally thought of fixing Karachi’s garbage dumping problem. However, as praiseworthy and important it is to impose a ban to put a stop to the growing garbage problem of the city, it is equally important to ensure its implementation.

The department should form a committee that overlooks the implementation of the ban on dumping household, industrial, commercial or hospital waste. But all this should be done after the provincial government cleans up the city. The garbage needs to be disposed first so that people are discouraged to litter clean areas around their houses. This would also make it easier for the department to monitor as to who is violating the ban. The procedure need not be empty words that are not practised in letter and in spirit.
