Nawaz Sharif’s disqualification

The party can still get votes in the next general elections

FAISALABAD: For the PML-N, its efforts to have its former party chief, Nawaz Sharif back in the saddle took a devastating turn when a Supreme Court bench barred him from holding the office by declaring the Elections Amendment Act of 2017 null and void. The party initiated the passage of the legislation by the two houses of parliament primarily to save the ousted prime minister as its party head. Yet the court, using its power has overturned the arrangement that cleared the way for Nawaz Sharif, bringing the rumours for Shehbaz Sharif being finally asked to take the party’s reins.

While the party fully kept up with its anti-judiciary rhetoric, the judiciary gave verdicts which are seen as a massive political defeat for the PML-N. However, the party can still get votes in the next general elections thereby affecting the results.
