HYDERABAD:
The Sindh High Court has ordered the Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (HMC) to submit the record of sanitary workers, along with details of their religions.

"The municipal commissioner [Shahid Ali Khan] is required to submit the list of sweepers and specify the religion of each sweeper," reads the order issued on Wednesday by a two-member SHC bench comprising Justice Mehmood A Khan and Justice Khadim Hussain Tunio.

One year on, little improvement seen in Hyderabad

The order was given on a petition filed by a citizen, Muhammad Rizwan, who complained about piles of garbage scattered in many areas of Hyderabad and drainage problems in the city. Rizwan's counsel, Advocate Muhammad Arshad S Pathan, argued in the court that one of the main reasons behind the HMC's failure to maintain cleanliness was that Muslims appointed against the vacancies of sweepers did not fulfil their duties.

The court fixed the next hearing for March 1.
