Understand the subject being taught rather than only memorising

KARACHI: This letter is directed at the country’s private schooling system. ‘Education is the process of facilitating learning, or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs and habits’. But in most of the private schools in Pakistan, teachers don’t teach anything to add to an individual’s knowledge about the subject they are studying, and instead only ask them to memorise the given course work or material as a means to pass exams and get good grades. In such a situation, students end up learning nothing, which is evident as they turn speechless once inquired about the subject they are ‘studying’.

This raises the question that what about those students who are not good at memorising. These students usually learn through real life examples, experiences of their teachers in the field, presentations, pictures, movies or other similar means of teaching. This method should be implemented for all students as it will help them in understanding the subject being taught rather than only memorising the given reading material to pass exams.
