Blocks and bans

Authorities should rethink their strategy

ISLAMABAD: In a bid to control overtly blasphemous and pornographic content on social media the government has been blocking websites containing such offensive material. Tens of thousands of such links have been blocked by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority. The move, however, does not provide a long-term solution to the issue, as this does not ensure the inaccessibility to pornographic content by all means.

Also, as previously the solution to blockage of cellular services came in the form of VPN, it is likely that something like that will be developed to access pornographic content. Also, this does not really address the much pressing issues of sexual abuse and harassment. Therefore, the authorities should rethink their strategy and check if it is actually helping in dealing with the issues at hand or not.
