Gaming giant Atari – the company behind Pac-Man and Pong – will soon launch its cryptocurrency called the “Atari Token.”

In a statement released last week, Atari chairman and CEO Frederic Chesnais stated: “Our aim is to take strategic positions with a limited cash risk, in order to best create value with the assets and the Atari brand.”

The name seems to have been chosen very carefully as previously the company released Atari token to buy in-game purchases.

Atari has already acquired a 15% stake in Infinity Network, a Gibraltar-based company.

“The company is developing a decentralised platform giving access to any form of digital entertainment, that is to say, a very wide offer ranging from video games to movies and music,” according to the statement.

The brand is also looking forward to creating ‘crypto-casinos’ which is in partnership with Pariplay allowing players to place bets either in real money or with cryptocurrency. To attract more customers, these casinos will also be offering many Atari games.

Atari has announced the launch of their cryptocurrency venture but is yet to provide more details. The company is also expected to launch its latest console in spring this year.

Dubbed as the ‘Ataribox’, the upcoming console will run a custom AMD processor with Radeon graphics along with the Linux operating system and a custom UI on top that will presumably make things a little more user-friendly for a TV interface and controller.
