Loss of credibility

Letter February 08, 2018
Extrajudicial killings and fake encounters have already earned the police an unfavourable repute

QUETTA: Almost three weeks have passed since the brutal and unjustified killing of Naqeebullah Mehsud. Suspended SSP Rao Anwar, who has been charged with the crime, still remains an absconder. The police’s failure to arrest suspects charged in not just this high-profile case but other minor ones too, adds to their long list of negative credentials. Extrajudicial killings and fake encounters have already earned the police an unfavourable repute. Where reforms in the police department are the need of the hour, inability to arrest the culprits let alone conducting transparent and fair investigations is detrimental to the institution of the police as a credible and trustworthy source of protection and safety for the masses.
