CM orders PDMA to provide immediate relief to quake victims

QUETTA: A powerful earthquake of 6.1 magnitude jolted parts of Balochistan on Wednesday morning, resulting in the death of an infant and injuries to 11 other people.

The dead and injured belonged to the same family, and the casualties came when the roof of a house in Darar Goth area of Bela collapse due to the tremors.

The injured were taken to the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital where those in critical condition were referred to Karachi.

Dr Abdul Rasheed Ronjho confirmed that one infant was killed and 11 other people got injured. He said emergency had been declared at the DHQ hospital in the wake of reports that many mud houses had been collapsed due to the powerful earthquake.

The tremors caused panic among the residents who rushed out from their homes to open places.

According to the metrological department, the epicentre of the earthquake was 20 kilometres east of Bela city, and it also affected other parts of the province.

Chief Minister Balochistan Mir Abdul Quddus Bizinjo expressed grief over the calamity. He directed the Pakistan Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) to provide swift relief to the victims of the earthquake.

“The provincial government is taking all measures to help the people affected by the earthquake,” he said, adding that no negligence would be tolerated.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Lasbela Shabir Ahmed Mengal, along with AC Bela Izzat Nazir Baloch, visited the affected areas to monitor the rescue work.

The DC Lasbela declared emergency in the wake of the earthquake and directed all necessary assistance in the quake-hit areas.
