The authorities should ensure that for the welfare of its students.

KARACHI: The University of Karachi recently opened its first-ever counselling centre on its premises. Such a move should be appreciated, especially considering the diversity of students the university boasts of. Being on a campus that has over 5,000 students hailing from different backgrounds in terms of cast, creed and race, can be an overwhelming experience for a student.

Additionally, the challenges that come with studying in a government university that has a significant presence of some of the country’s popular political parties can add to the stress of dealing with one’s university education. A counseling centre can help students in overcoming their anxieties and understand to deal with their surroundings in a much nuanced way. However, for this to happen it is important that the staff at the centre constitute professionals who know their job well and hold no biases or prejudices. The authorities should ensure that for the welfare of its students.
