Transgender rights

CII declaration welcomed as an important step towards the improvement in the social status of the impoverished

ISLAMABAD: Some weeks ago, the Council of Islamic Ideology declared that the transgender community deserves equal rights and treatment in society. The declaration was welcomed as an important step towards the improvement in the social status of the impoverished, socially neglected and stigmatised community and a bill relating to it was drafted. However, now the JUI-F has raised objection over the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill 2017 in relation to its clause of eliminating the need for medical examination to be conducted to prove that an individual is a transgender person or not, stating that this may cause religious issues.

Here, it is important to note that no religious body and group has raised any significant objection over the aforementioned. Further, giving the community the same rights as others without having to prove it through a medical examination is pivotal to make them an independent and self-reliant member of society.
