Callous remarks

Despite receiving criticism against such a statement on social media CJP Saqib Nisar has not apologised for sexism

ISLAMABAD: Politicians in Pakistan are known to make sexist statements even on the floor of the National Assembly. While such a callous mindset of policymakers is worrisome, what is more problematic is the head of the judiciary who makes similar statements as his prejudices can lead to shaky outcomes.

A recent statement by the chief justice of Pakistan is another reminder of Pakistan’s patriarchal society. While speaking at a recent event he compared the length of a speech to a woman’s skirt. “A speech should be like a woman’s skirt. It should not be too long and neither too short that it doesn’t cover the subject,” said the top judge.

Not only does such a statement reek of sexism, but coming from the country’s top judge in the year 2018 only proves that there is a long way to go before Pakistan can truly progress. It is also worth mentioning that despite a fair amount of backlash against such a statement on social media, CJP Saqib Nisar has not apologised for such blatant sexism.
