Indifferent attitude

Letter January 21, 2018
With attitude short-lived 'hue and cry' before returning to 'normalcy' as with Zainab's case, Pakistan cannot...

KARACHI: This is in response to Chris Cork’s article titled ‘Zainab? Who Zainab?’ published in this paper on Jan 18th. Mr Cork has rightly pointed out the attitude we as a nation have for cases concerning its citizenry. Be it violence against women, children or minorities, the citizenry only raises a hue and cry for about a week or perhaps a month or two and then goes back to ‘normalcy’. Had we been the kind of people who could bring about change through collective anger, there would have been no call for ‘Justice for Zainab’ to begin with.

We cried when the child sex scandal was reported, we cried when an entire slum belonging to our religious minority was burnt down to ashes and we cried even when a teenage girl was gang raped and paraded naked. But soon we forgot about all that and moved on with our lives. With such an attitude Pakistan will never be able to progress.
