Misuse of state funds

Letter January 21, 2018
SHC has asked Sindh government to submit details of funding and reasoning of its billboard advertisements of PPP

KARACHI: Issuing directives following a petition, the Sindh High Court (SHC) has instructed the Sindh government to submit details of funding and reasoning of its billboard advertisements consisting pictures of Peoples Party leaders put up as public service messages or for the purpose of ‘public awareness’. Such advertisements are not only placed at major roads but also in adverts published in leading national dailies. In fact political parties making provincial governments at some point in time, in one way or the other, have marketed their parties more than their mandate through such advertisements. This is unlawful.

However, what they perhaps forget is that the funds utilised for such advertisements are of the state and not of the political parties which cash in on this opportunity to increase their vote bank. In the wake of this, the respective courts in other provinces too should take action on the same issue and restrict political parties from using state resources to fund their own political agendas.
