Two BC men, polio worker among four killed in Quetta

The attacks take place at Balochistan Flyover and in Hazar Ganji area

QUETTA: Two personnel of the Balochistan Constabulary (BC), as well as a female polio worker and her daughter, were gunned down in Quetta on Thursday in two separate firing incidents.

According to a police official, the first attack took place at Balochistan Flyover in the early hours of Thursday.

“Armed men riding a motorbike sprayed bullets on three BC men who were on their way to duty. Two personnel – constable Muhammad Ilyas and sepoy Shoukat Ali – died on the spot. Another soldier, Javed, sustained injuries but the attackers escaped unchallenged,” he said.

After the attack, officials of law enforcement agencies (LEAs) and rescue workers rushed to the spot, cordoned off the area and shifted the dead and the injured to the Civil Hospital.



Hours after the first incident, unknown persons opened fire on a female polio worker, who was offering her services along with her daughter in Hazar Ganji area on the outskirts of the provincial capital. Both were killed in the incident.

“The mother was a Community Health Worker (CHW) deployed in the area to administer anti-polio drops to children,” said Balochistan IGP Moazzam Jah Ansari.

After the attack, paramilitary Frontier Corps and police launched a joint search operation in Hazar Ganji. Bodies of the slain mother and her daughter, identified as Sakeena and Rizwana respectively, were also evacuated to the Bolan Medical Complex (BMC) Hospital for autopsy.

The IGP said the second incident took place close to the polio workers’ residence.

“We are investigating the similarity in both the attacks and will take action after identifying the group which carried out these attacks,” said Ansari, adding that at least 1,200 polio teams were participating in the ongoing anti-polio drive, and security was provided to all the teams.
