Non-payment of salaries

Letter January 19, 2018
The provincial education department should resolve the issue at the earliest

SAHIWAL: Media reports show that government school teachers in Punjab’s Sahiwal district have not been paid their salaries for the past seven months. The fault of course lies with mismanagement during the recruitment procedure by the authorities concerned. The teachers who started working on their respective posts in August 2017 were recruited after a prolonged recruitment period that started in August 2016, whereas it has been seven months since August 2017, that the teachers have not been paid their remuneration after joining their respective positions. According to an unnamed source, quoted by the news media, the delay in disbursement of the salaries was caused by the delayed verification of the degrees to be done via the local education department.

Provincial education departments remain occupied with numerous managerial and administrative issues yet non-payment of salaries is a major disincentive for those performing their duties diligently. The provincial education department should resolve the issue at the earliest before the teachers decide to stop performing their duties.
