Army gets magisterial powers for Lodhran by-polls

Apart from PTI's nominee Ali Tareen, 14 candidates will contest in the by-election

Votes were cast under the watchful eye of the army.

By-election for NA-154 Lodhran, which fell vacant after Jehangir Tareen's disqualification, will be conducted under the supervision of the Pakistan Army.

According to Express News, the NA-154 by-election will be take place on February 12. The decision entitles army personnel to be present inside and outside the polling stations and will also be given magisterial powers.

A request has been sent to the Minister of Defence for the deployment of the army for the by-polls.

Apart from him, there are 14 other nominees for the position including Shafeeq Arain, Sajid Inam, Nafees Ahmed and Mirza Ali Baig.

The Supreme Court last month disqualified Jahangir Tareen on very similar grounds to those used by the larger bench to oust former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

The court did not pass any direction regarding allegations of corruption against Tareen, but termed him ineligible for holding public office.
