Guidance for children

The importance of educating young kids about inappropriate advances or sexual abuse has increased manifold

ISLAMABAD: Amidst the hue and cry raised over cases of harassment and assault pertaining to women and children, a shocking aspect that perhaps is as old as the menace but has now surfaced strongly more than ever is of the harasser or the accused being one’s own blood relative or a close family member.

According to an official from Society for the Protection of the Rights of the Child, in 43 per cent of the cases reported during the past year, culprits happened to be someone closely known to the families of the abused, whereas in 16 per cent of the cases perpetrators were related to the family. As the unit of a family can no longer be guaranteed as a safe space for children, the importance of educating young kids about inappropriate advances or sexual abuse has increased manifold. Moreover, it has become equally important to encourage one’s child to speak about such experiences and not stay silent over the ordeal.
