Another protest movement

Letter January 02, 2018
The courts must ensure that the movement is conducted in a peaceful manner

ISLAMABAD: With Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) chief Tahirul Qadri’s warning for Law Minister Rana Sanaullah and Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif to resign is nearing its deadline, the cleric’s party is preparing to launch another protest movement to pressure the Punjab government. The party has already allied with other opposition parties to launch a protest against the CM and the provincial law minster. The protest which is likely to be launched on January 7th seeks to initiate ‘decisive’ action against the Punjab government.

Though protests and demonstrations are the due right of stakeholders in a ‘democratic’ political setup, PAT’s protest should in no way cause instability in the country, similar to the manner in which the Faizabad sit-in did. The courts must ensure that the movement is conducted in a peaceful manner with no force or use of repressive measures being employed from either side.
