HYDERABAD: Former State Bank governor Dr Ishrat Husain expressed satisfaction over the social and economic development occurring simultaneously with construction of coal and energy projects in the desert at an event in Tharparkar on Sunday. Husain and Oxford University Press Pakistan Managing Director Ameena Saiyid inaugurated a school and a handicraft centre for women built by the Thar Foundation in Abbadn Jo Tarr village in Thar Coal Block II.

“We could do away with illiteracy, poverty, and hunger if Pakistan’s private sector adopted the development model in place in Thar,” said Husain. “SECMC’s bid to empower women of the area, socially and economically, in the form of the women dump truck driving programme is innovative and exemplary,” Saiyid noted.

The delegation which visited Thar Coal Block II also comprised prominent analyst Dr Huma Baqai, President Meezan Bank Irfan Siddiqui, Chief Executive Officer of Habib University Parvez Ghias and others.
