MULTAN: An Accountability Court sent two government employees on 13-day physical remand in a corruption case in Multan. The accused were arrested by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

A NAB spokesperson said Bahawalpur Division Deputy Registrar Muhammad Walayat Khan and former cooperatives inspector Iqbal Ahmed were nabbed for their involvement in illegally reactivating Government Officials Cooperative House Building Society in Multan.

He added that both accused illegally reactivated Government Officials Cooperative House Building Society Multan in 2010 which was defunct since 1959.

Initially the cooperatives refused to reactivate the society, however, upon promise of 5% quota for employees of co-operatives, the management committee illegally reactivated the society thereby allotting 1946 plots in violation of bye-laws in both phases, he said. He maintained the management committee illegally used the logo of MDA thereby giving false impression to general public and collected Rs1.2 billion.

Till date marginal development worth Rs50 million had been carried but not a single plot had been handed over to allottees, he pointed out.

Earlier in 2016, the only permission allowed by MDA for phase II was withdrawn by declaring the entire scheme as illegal.
