Six, including father-in-law, get death sentence over ‘honour killing’ in India

An Indian court in Tamil Nadu state on Tuesday handed down death sentence to six people in the ‘honour killing’ case of a Dalit – the lowest social caste of Hindus in India – youth, Shankar lynched to death last year.

Shankar’s father-in-law Chinnasamy was among those awarded the death sentence, The Hindu reported.

One accused was awarded life sentence and the other five-year imprisonment. Victim's mother-in-law Annalakshmi, however, among two suspects was acquitted by the court.

Shankar was murdered by three people near a bus stand in broad day light on March 13, 2016. His wife, Kausalya could hardly escape the brutal attack, allegedly carried out on her father Chinnasamy’s behest in Udumalpet.

The shocking incident was captured on camera and its video footage had gone viral, prompting public outcry in the state.
