The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) clarified, on Thursday, that Kulsoom Nawaz remains a member of the National Assembly (NA) despite not taking oath, Express News reported.

Responding to a letter sent by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) asking for a disqualification due to delay in Kulsoom taking oath after winning NA-120 by-elections, ECP said the former prime minister Nawaz Sharif's wife has been unable to take oath due to her medical condition but is still a member of the parliament.

The ECP further explained that there was no deadline for an elected member to take an oath in the national and provincial assemblies. However, it was mandatory for MNAs to take oath to be allowed to attend and vote in the parliament under Article 65 of the constitution.

PTI spokesperson Fawad Chaudhry observed in the letter that Kulsoom had failed to fulfill legal requirement “for the winning candidate to take an oath in the National Assembly.” Chaudhry asks for legal and constitutional views of the election commissioner, putting forth the question of the possibility of re-elections after declaring NA-120 polls null and void.

Kulsoom has been battling lymphoma- a form of cancer, since the diagnosis in August. She is currently receiving treatment in London and has undergone three surgeries since August.

Ahmer Ali | 6 years ago | Reply Good all credit goes to our election commission of Pakistan and lawmakers who implement laws in Pakistan and most of all PMLN's government which is taking full advantages of its clear majority in national assembly.
