Consuming toxic water

Despite claims by the Sindh government situation in various small cities and districts of the province is miserable

KARACHI: The Sindh chief minister during a court hearing on cases regarding non-functioning water filtration plants in the province admitted the intrusion of human waste into the water supply pipelines across Karachi. It was further revealed during the court proceedings that 90 per cent of the water supplied to Karachi city is unfit for human consumption.

Despite the many claims by the Sindh government of spending billions to provide clean drinking water to people, the situation in various small cities and districts of the province is miserable, where every day deaths are recorded due to diseases caused by consumption of contaminated water.

The problem is entirely technical in nature as the water supply and management authorities have failed to ensure the functioning of the machinery used to filter and purify water.

Since the chief minister has admitted the failure of his government, he must now ensure that the relevant ministry takes action on the matter at the earliest.
