IDPs await return

Kurram Agency area of Pakistan became a battle ground for sectarian clashes back in 2008

QUETTA: Much like the victims of the deadly 2008 earthquake or other calamities, victims of the 2007-2008 Parachinar, Kurram Agency, clashes await the completion of the rehabilitation process so that they can return to their hometown. Although the Parachinar Reforms Committee was formed for the purpose, owing to the government’s lack of interest it has not been able to deliver much.

The Kurram Agency area of Pakistan became a battle ground for sectarian clashes back in 2008. The region has also been under the Taliban’s influence. As part of the rehabilitation process, the government paid the affectees in instalments and hence the internally-displaced families continued to rely on the funds to meet their day-to-day expenses until the payments stopped.

Since Pakistan is already catering to a huge migrant population from Afghanistan, it is important that the government must also take measures to resolve an internal migrant crisis and ensure timely working of the Parachinar Reforms Committee.
