KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Amir Senator Sirajul Haq has demanded a judicial inquiry into the matter of an amendment of the Khatm-e-Nabuwat oath and announced that Rabiul Awwal 12 will be observed as Youm-e-Azm-e-Tahafuz Khatm-e-Nabuwat’ throughout the country.

Haq announced this on Thursday while addressing a press conference at JI Karachi headquarters Idara Noor-e-Haq. He said that the resignation of a minister is not enough, “the nation wants to know the names of all those behind this conspiracy.”

He also said that the United States secretary of state is due to arrive in Pakistan at a time when they have asked us to amend the blasphemy laws. He demanded that the government categorically refuse their request. Referring to the Faizabad sit-ins, he complained about the federal government’s delay in responding to the demands made by the protesters.

He remarked that it is the responsibility of the government to take visible measures so as to defuse the prevailing situation in the country. He claimed that the Raja Zafarul Haq’s report contained significant names, which is why the report is being kept secret.

The senator said that the army did not intervene in the Faizabad incident on its own, it was called in by the federal government. “The issue escalated because the government did not fulfill its responsibilities,” he lamented.

Haq also demanded the Senate committee, chaired by Mutahidda Qaumi Movement - Pakistan’s Nasreen Jalil, withdraw its recommendations in connection with amending the blasphemy law.
