LAHORE: According to the minister of Postal Services, the postal department is currently suffering losses worth billions. Unlike other loss-making state-owned entities like PIA and the Pakistan Steel Mills, the department cannot entirely be blamed for the losses it is incurring. Technological advancement and availability of most rapid means of communication have also made postal services redundant to a considerable extent.
However, not being able to give effective competition to private courier services, which comparatively charge a lot more than the Pakistan Post, is certainly due to the inefficiency of the ministry and the departments concerned.
The minister also stated that no other government ministry or department uses the national postal service either. So the postal department needs urgent attention to put its house in order as the department is as old as the state itself.
