KARACHI: Chief Minister (CM) Murad Ali Shah directed the Karachi package project director to expedite the construction of the U-turn at Sharae Faisal or he would take strict action.

This he said while presiding over a meeting to review some schemes of the Karachi package which keep getting delayed for one reason or another. The meeting was attended by Planning and Development Chairperson Mohammad Waseem, Principal Secretary to the CM Sohail Rajput, Finance Secretary Hassan Naqvi, Karachi Package Project Director Niaz Soomro and Karachi package engineer Khalid Masroor.

The CM said that work on the construction of the U-turn at the Natha Khan Bridge has not been started yet. As a result, traffic jams in that area have become the order of the day.

"Do you have any idea what problems the people of the area are facing?" the CM asked, directing the planning and development chairperson to visit the area, along with Soomro and Masroor, and get the work started and report back to him.

The CM has already released Rs214.47 million for construction of the U-turn and other projects. "Why is the work being delayed when I have released the funds?" he questioned and sent his team, led by Waseem, to evaluate the situation.

Shah also said that the underpass at Submarine Chowrangi has not been completed so far. "I want to open its one track on December 15 and will perform a stone laying ceremony of the flyover at Sunset Boulevard on the same day," he said, adding that work on the Sunset Boulevard flyover must be completed within three months of the starting date.

Another Rs10b to be allocated for Karachi Package

"Those who cannot follow my deadline [for completion of the construction works] should find work elsewhere," he warned. He directed the local government department to beautify Sharae Faisal by planting more plants and other greenery. "Sharae Faisal is the face of the city and must be kept beautiful, neat, clean and illuminated," he said.

Rajput told the CM that he had held a meeting with some architects for the uplift of areas in front of the Jinnah terminal on Share Faisal.

"The architects will start beautification work within 10 days," promised Rajput.

Shah directed the Karachi package project director to start a survey of the roads of the old city area of Lyari, such as Lea Market, Mithadar, Kharadar, Jhuna Market, Cheel Chowk, Kalakot and other areas.

CM threatens to take over Karachi package project director’s responsibilities

"I am allocating Rs600 million for the reconstruction of these roads," he said, directing the project director to reconstruct the drainage systems of the areas as well.

He also directed Soomro to reconstruct the roads leading to the jamatkhana in Kharadar.

"I will review the progress of the works I have decided to take up today," he said.
